Is Patagonia sustainable?

Our assessment
Partly sustainable
Patagonia delivers more sustainability substance than almost any other outdoor brand — from bluesign through Fair Trade factories to a consistent PFAS phase-out. The drawback: absolute CO2 emissions are not yet falling fast enough. For outdoor clothing, one of the better-documented options.
What we know
Patagonia has been a bluesign System Partner since 2000 — the first brand worldwide. Over 90% of products are made in Fair Trade-certified factories, affecting more than 85,000 workers; the premium flows into a fund whose use the factory workers decide themselves. 84 to 86% of materials are recycled or of renewable origin (as of autumn 2025). PFAS are fully eliminated from spring 2025, and the net-zero goal is set for 2040. With its Worn Wear programme, Patagonia offers repair, secondhand and take-back. Since 2022 the company has belonged to the climate foundation Holdfast Collective. The critical point remains that, according to its own report, CO2 emissions are not yet on the necessary reduction path.
