Our assessment
Mostly sustainable
Engel Natur is one of the most consistent natural-textile makers in Germany. Both top standards — GOTS and IVN Best — regional production on the Swabian Alb with suppliers within a 40 km radius, and mulesing-free wool from Patagonia together form a coherent picture. The high price is the flip side of the high transparency.
What we know
Engel Natur is a natural-textile pioneer from Pfullingen in Baden-Württemberg, active since 1982 and a founding member of the IVN. The textiles carry GOTS and IVN Best, the strictest natural-textile standard in the world: unlike GOTS, which allows up to 30% non-organic fibres, IVN Best requires 100% fibres from certified organic farming or animal husbandry. 95% of the range carries one of the two certifications. The organic merino wool comes from Patagonia, certified organic animal husbandry and mulesing-free. Production takes place in Pfullingen, with suppliers mostly within a 50-kilometre radius. The dyes are free of heavy metals and AZO substances.
