Our assessment

Mostly sustainable

Frosch has held an eco-pioneer role for almost 40 years — and with verifiable substance: EMAS since 2003, 100% rPET bottles, plant-based surfactants, Cradle-to-Cradle products. Unusually consistent for a mass-market brand. For families who don't want to buy household products specially from organic shops, Frosch is the solid everyday option in any supermarket.

What we know

Frosch is a brand of Werner & Mertz GmbH from Mainz, a fourth-generation family business dating back to 1867. Since 1986, Frosch has been a pioneer of phosphate-free cleaning products. Since 2024 the bottles are made entirely from post-consumer recyclate from the yellow recycling bag and PET deposit bottles. The company has been EMAS-certified since 2003 and is guided by the Cradle-to-Cradle principle: the formulations are plant-based and biodegradable, and the surfactants come mainly from European rapeseed, sunflowers or olives. More than 26 product categories are available as refill pouches, which save around 70% packaging material. In 2024 Frosch received the Circularity Champion Award. The products contain no microplastics, no phosphates and no parabens. Frosch is the market leader in household cleaners in Germany.
