Demeter
Demeter – Biodynamic agriculture: What this certification means
Category: Food / Agriculture
What is verified
Demeter is based on the biodynamic principle: the farm should be a closed living organism that is as self-sustaining as possible. Keeping animals is mandatory — their manure fertilises the farm's own fields. Dehorning cows is prohibited. Biodynamic preparations made from cow manure, medicinal herbs and silica are used. At least 10% of the farm's area must be maintained as biodiversity space. In processing, only 21 additives are permitted — fewer than Bioland or Naturland (22) and far fewer than the EU organic standard (53). Inspected annually by independent organic control bodies and by Demeter e.V. itself, partly unannounced. Demeter is the strictest of the three major German organic association labels.
