Bioland
Bioland – Organic farming in Germany and South Tyrol: What this certification means
Category: Food / Agriculture
What is verified
Bioland is the only one of the three major association labels (Bioland, Demeter, Naturland) with a clear regional limit: only farms in Germany and South Tyrol are certified. Whole-farm conversion is mandatory — no farm may operate conventionally at the same time. In processing, only 22 additives are permitted (EU organic: 53). Seed must be organically certified, and animal husbandry is stricter than legally required. Unlike Demeter, there is no ideological approach and no requirement for biodynamic methods — the focus is on organic-biological farming with a strong regional link. Inspected at least once a year by independent control bodies; in addition, 10–20% of farms are checked on a random basis.
