spiel gut®: What this certification means

What does this certification mean?

The spiel gut® label has helped parents identify high-quality, age-appropriate toys since the 1950s. Unlike environmental or sustainability certifications, it does not assess how a toy is produced. Instead, it focuses on play value, safety, usability and educational quality.

The label is awarded by the non-profit organisation Arbeitsausschuss Kinderspiel + Spielzeug e. V.. Products are evaluated by an independent panel that includes experts in education, medicine, psychology, design and child development, while children also test the toys in everyday play situations.

What is verified?

Toys are assessed for play value, ease of use and age appropriateness.
Safety, workmanship and durability form part of the evaluation.
Reviewers consider whether a toy encourages creativity, imagination and independent play.
Practical usability and material quality are also taken into account.
Children test the toys under real-life conditions.
The label is awarded by an independent jury without influence from manufacturers.
