Rainforest Alliance: What this certification means
What does this certification mean?
The Rainforest Alliance works to protect forests, conserve biodiversity and improve livelihoods in agriculture. Its green frog label appears on products such as coffee, cocoa, tea, bananas, pineapples and cut flowers, and increasingly on selected forestry products.
The current certification was introduced in 2020 following the merger of the former Rainforest Alliance Certification and the UTZ programme. It takes a broad approach by combining environmental protection with social requirements and long-term economic resilience for farming communities.
What is verified?
Farms must meet requirements designed to protect forests, ecosystems and biodiversity.
The standard includes criteria covering soil conservation, water management and responsible pesticide use.
Labour rights, occupational health and measures against child labour and forced labour form part of the certification.
Certified farms are required to assess risks and implement continuous improvements.
Certified raw materials must remain traceable throughout the supply chain.
Independent certification bodies carry out regular audits according to the Rainforest Alliance Standard.
