kbt
KBT (controlled organic animal husbandry): What this certification means
What does this certification mean?
KBT stands for controlled organic animal husbandry (“kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung”). The designation is mainly found on natural textiles made from sheep's wool, including baby blankets, mattresses, sleeping bags and wool clothing. It refers specifically to how the animals are kept and how the wool is produced.
Unlike broader textile certifications such as GOTS or IVN BEST, KBT focuses solely on the origin of the wool. It does not assess what happens to the fibre once it enters textile production.
What is verified?
Sheep must be raised according to recognised organic farming standards.
Feeding, grazing and housing must comply with the requirements of the EU Organic Regulation or equivalent recognised organic standards.
Preventive use of antibiotics and other veterinary medicines is restricted.
Genetically modified animal feed is prohibited.
The practice of mulesing is not permitted for KBT-certified wool.
Compliance is verified through recognised organic inspection bodies.
