Global Recycled Standard (GRS): What this certification means
What does this certification mean?
The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is an international certification for products containing recycled materials. Developed by Textile Exchange, it goes beyond simply verifying recycled content by also setting requirements for processing, chemical management and core social criteria.
The label is most commonly found on textiles but can also apply to other products made with recycled materials. Its purpose is to verify that recycled content has been independently checked and remains traceable throughout the supply chain.
What is verified?
Products must contain at least 20% recycled material, while use of the GRS logo generally requires at least 50% recycled content.
Recycled materials must remain traceable throughout the supply chain.
Processing facilities must meet environmental management and chemical use requirements.
Social criteria are based in part on the core conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO).
Companies must maintain documented quality and traceability systems.
Independent certification bodies audit all relevant stages of production on a regular basis.
