Blue Angel: What this certification means
What does this certification mean?
The Blue Angel is the world's oldest environmental label. Introduced by the German government in 1978, it is supported by the Federal Ministry for the Environment. The label is awarded independently by RAL gGmbH based on criteria developed by the German Environment Agency.
Unlike many certifications, the Blue Angel is not limited to a single type of product. It identifies products and services that demonstrate measurable environmental advantages within their own category. The exact requirements therefore differ depending on whether the product is, for example, paint, furniture, paper, detergents or electrical equipment.
What is verified?
Each product category has its own publicly available certification criteria.
Depending on the product, assessments may cover resource use, energy efficiency, hazardous substances, emissions, durability or repairability.
The requirements are intended to go beyond legal minimum standards.
The criteria are reviewed regularly to reflect new scientific knowledge and technological developments.
Independent bodies verify compliance before the label is awarded.
Certification is granted for a limited period and must be renewed.
