BDIH: What this certification means
What does this certification mean?
BDIH is a German certification for natural cosmetics. Developed by the German Federation of Industrial and Trading Companies for Pharmaceuticals, Health Products, Food Supplements and Personal Care, it has since become part of the international COSMOS framework. As a result, many products now display both the BDIH and COSMOS logos.
The certification is designed to help consumers identify cosmetics that meet defined natural cosmetics criteria. Its main focus is on ingredient selection, responsible sourcing of natural raw materials and avoiding a wide range of synthetic substances.
What is verified?
Synthetic fragrances, many synthetic colourants, silicones, paraffins and other petroleum-based ingredients are prohibited.
Plant and animal-derived ingredients must meet defined sourcing and processing requirements.
Whenever available, ingredients should come from certified organic farming or controlled wild collection.
Animal testing for finished cosmetic products is prohibited, and ingredient sourcing must also comply with the certification's criteria.
Compliance is verified by independent certification bodies.
New certifications are now issued under the COSMOS Standard, which builds on the original BDIH requirements.
