B Corp: What this certification means
What does this certification mean?
B Corp is a company-level certification run by the non-profit organisation B Lab. It does not certify a single product, but looks at the business as a whole: governance, workers, environment, customers and broader social impact are assessed together.
For families, B Corp can be a useful signal when trying to understand whether a company takes responsibility beyond a few “green” products. It is not, however, a pure environmental label and it does not mean that every product from a certified company is automatically sustainable.
What is verified?
Companies must meet social, environmental and governance-related requirements.
The assessment covers areas such as governance, working conditions, environmental management, customer impact and community contribution.
Companies must meet transparency requirements and undergo regular reassessment.
Certification includes a legal commitment to consider stakeholders beyond shareholders in business decisions.
The certification is reviewed by B Lab and is not based solely on a company's own claims.
B Lab is updating its standards, with future requirements expected to rely more strongly on mandatory minimum criteria across key topics.
